Abstract:
In 1939, a well-known businessman and insurance agent Robert Bryson Jones (1872-1956), an early supporter and one of the first board members of the Kansas City Museum, donated some South-American mummies to the Collection. Jones had acquired the two mummy bundles during his trip to La Paz, Bolivia in the 1920s. They were put on display when the Kansas City Museum opened (Kansas City, Missouri, USA) in May, 1940. According to an early museum artefact interpretation and general understanding of ancient Inca Civilization, the mummies can be attributed to the Inca Culture and could date back between 2,000 and 500 years. The mummies were on display between 1940 and 1960 in the Kansas City Museum, where they were a popular attraction for visitors. The two South-American bundle mummies became part of the international touring exhibition ’Mummies of the World: The Exhibition’, which made a tour stop at the Kansas City Museum in the Union Station, Kansas City in 2017.
